Gym member churn calculator

Churn is the number most gyms never work out, because members do not cancel — they fade. The membership simply is not renewed, two months after the person stopped coming.

Give it three numbers from last month and it will tell you your churn rate, how long the average member stays, what one is worth across that time, and what you are losing a year.

Members rarely cancel out loud. Count anyone whose plan ended and was not renewed, not only the ones who told you they were going.

Your churn

Monthly churn rate8.0%

Normal for an Indian gym, and worth improving.

Average member stays12.5 months
Worth over that time₹15,000
Lost revenue a year₹2,30,400

If this month repeats twelve times

Halving churn to 4.0% would roughly double how long a member stays.

How churn is worked out here

Monthly churn is the members who left during the month divided by the members you started it with. A gym that began January with 200 members and lost 16 has 8% monthly churn.

Average lifetime is one divided by that rate, in months. At 8%, the average member stays 12.5 months. At 5%, they stay 20 months — which is the whole argument for retention work in a single comparison.

What a healthy number looks like

Indian gyms commonly run 5–10% monthly churn, which is higher than Western averages and largely down to annual-payment culture and January intake patterns. Under 5% is good. Over 12% means people are leaving faster than any amount of marketing can replace.

The figure to watch is not the month-to-month number, which is noisy, but its direction over six months.

The cheapest way to move it

Attendance, not price. Members stop attending before they stop paying, usually by six to ten weeks — which means attendance is an early warning system and the renewal date is a post-mortem.

A member who trains twelve times in their first six weeks usually renews. One who trains four times usually does not, whatever they say at the desk. Counting those first-six-week visits, and stepping in at four, is worth more than any discount.

Questions

What is a good churn rate for a gym?
Under 5% a month is good for an Indian gym. Five to ten per cent is common. Above twelve per cent, members are leaving faster than marketing can replace them.
How do I calculate member lifetime value?
Divide one by your monthly churn rate to get the average number of months a member stays, then multiply by what they pay each month. At 8% churn and ₹1,200 a month, a member is worth about ₹15,000.
Why does churn matter more than new joins?
Because replacing a member costs marketing money and a lost member takes their referrals with them. Halving churn does more for revenue than doubling the advertising budget, and costs less.
